JOOTA AWARDS 2025 – About the Judging
The JOOTA AWARDS 2025 judging sessions were held from mid-May through the end of June.
Each olive oil entry was assigned a secret code number by a lawyer appointed by the organizer to ensure anonymity.
The extra virgin olive oils from around the world were then blind-tasted and evaluated by judges appointed by the competition committee for both the Quality Awards and the Special Awards.
Quality Awards – The Glorious Drop That Triumphed in Fierce
Outstanding extra virgin olive oils from around the world showcased their unique character, resulting in a fierce competition where distinctions were made by the slimmest of margins.
It was, indeed, a high-level competition that left a lasting impression.
The Quality Awards are presented in six categories, including four based on the intensity and profile of fruitiness, and two dedicated to oils produced in the Southern Hemisphere and Japan. Within each category, the highest-ranking oils are awarded the Diamond, Gold, and Silver distinctions.
Additionally, a “Best of” award is presented to one outstanding product in each of the following categories: monovarietal extra virgin olive oil, blend extra virgin olive oil, and by country (when certain conditions are met).
Judging is conducted by internationally certified olive oil tasting professionals, including “tasters” and “panel leaders” officially recognized by governmental or public institutions, along with experts from IOC-accredited panels and laboratories.
Special Awards – Exceptional Flavor and Market Potential, Carefully Selected by Top Buyers and Leading Chefs
The Special Awards are determined through judging by professionals from the distribution, retail, and culinary industries, resulting in the Buyer’s Award and the Chef’s Award.
This year, a total of 11 renowned buyers and chefs from leading establishments each selected outstanding extra virgin olive oils based on their unique perspectives.
These oils, celebrated for their distinctive character and outstanding flavor, were honored with the award.
Buyer’s Award:
This category includes the Department Store Buyer’s Award and the Luxury Supermarket Buyer’s Award.
Each buyer selected exceptional products in two areas:
・The Flavor Category, and
・The Bottle Design Category, which highlights oils with high market potential for in-store presentation.
Chef’s Award:
Leading chefs from various culinary fields selected oils they recognized as having strong potential for pairing with ingredients and dishes.
In addition, products selected by a Japanese cuisine chef were awarded the “Japanese Cuisine Extra Virgin Olive Oil Award.”
